SCHISTOSOMIASIS
Spring Action: Application of Genomic Technologies

For the community outreach aspect of our Capstone class, I am working in a team of genetics driven students to create a mobile learning cart to teach children the basics of genomics and the potential careers and studies they can get involved with. The themes for our three projects are: the fight against Schistosomiasis (ways kids can be involved in epidemiology), genetically inherited cancers (how people can get tested and the possible treatment options), and finally personalized medicine based on genetics. The main tie-in of all of our projects would be the fact that all of our projects have a strong base in genomics. We hope to be able to introduce children to these more complex concepts at a young age not only so that they get a taste of what they will be learning in the future, but also so that it might inspire a love for science in some of their minds. Our ultimate aim is to share the knowledge we have gained over the last semester with the community.
