What is Schistosomiasis?

According to the US Center for Disease Control, Schistosomiasis is considered to be one of the most significant Neglected Tropical Diseases. It is a disease that is transmitted to humans by the infiltration of the human body by a blood fluke known as a schistosome. â€‹

Humans can contract this disease through contact with contaminated water, which is particularly large threat in lesser developed countries where a water source is necessary for the peoples lives. When people in rural regions continue to return to a contaminated spot for water or bathing they are repeatedly exposed to these dangerous worms. Once the individual fully contracts the disease, Schistosomiasis can lead to bladder cancer and increased risk of strokes and paralysis.

Schistosomiasis is a serious threat and current treatment options have proven to be impractical long term.
